Default How many zerks under a '96 XJ?

I'm counting 9:

2 on each of the front brake calipers
2 on where the steering linkages hook into both steering knuckles
3 on the various steering linkages

and

2 on the rear drum brakes

Have I missed any?

A lot depends on what has been put on your jeep over the years. Every tie rod end should have them, but someone might have put on the kind without fittings. All your u-joints might have them, but they might not. When I picked my 96 up, three of the u-joints had zerk fittings, but one of them was so covered in grime, it was impossible to get any grease in it. That u-joint ended up going a few weeks after I bought it.

Oh yeah, your ball joints might have them, but even if they do, it can be hard to get the grease gun in there sometime.

I'm sure there's more, but my brain isn't working right this sec.

Those are bleed screws on the calipers and wheel cylinders. Not grease fittings.

I believe OP is thinking the bleeder screws are fittings.

Those aren't "zerks" on your calipers.. those are bleed screws. The ones near the drums are too.. Don't try to grease them.

I had a young guy working for me long time ago and he did that exact thing on a customers car.

Check one of the factory service manuals for those to get an idea there. Then as you were told earlier go through slowly from front to back checking for any added items that require grease. I was going through what are on mine and lost track twice but a lot of extras. Missing some repeatedly can be costly with worn out parts, some making your XJ unsafe.

Deducting the 4 miscounted bleeders it seems we are missing a lot. I'll count after work unless someone beats me to it by then

7 steering & suspension:
- Tie rod end at drag link to pitman arm
- Tie rod end at drag link to right steering knuckle
- Tie rod end at tie rod to drag link
- Tie rod end at tie rod to left steering knuckle
- Trackbar at frame
- Left upper ball joint
- Right upper ball joint

8 driveline (maybe):
- U joint at rear axle pinion
- U joint at rear transfer case output/slip yoke
- 2x U joints at double-cardan at front transfer case output
- Slip section in the middle of front drive shaft (not all models)
- U joint at front axle pinion
- U joint at left front wheel
- U joint at right front wheel

Notes:
- Not all U joints are greaseable. Many of the factory ones were, but either style is an option. Zerk fittings can be found either between two caps on an angle or right in the middle of a cap on some parts.
- Aftermarket may have greaseable lower ball joints. Spicer OE does not.
- '96+ utilized an external slip yoke on the rear transfer case. This should be greased regularly. To access it you must remove the rear drive shaft: take out the four screws holding the rearmost U joint to the pinion yoke, and snip the metal straps at the rubber grease boot. The DS pulls right off and you can pack the slip yoke with grease. Prior to 1996 this was lubricated by ATF from inside the transfer case.
- Some front shafts may use the above style in their slip section instead of a zerk fitting. Same applies.
- The double-cardan joint in the front shaft has a centering ball that must be greased by way of a needle fitting.
