1994 Cherokee SE 4.0 4WD man trans with AC built late 1993. How do I determine if it has the max (heavy duty) cooling option? I can not find the build sheet.

Does the AC fan equal the max cooing option? It also has the engine driven fan. Water pumps appear to be the same either way per Chrysler.

I need to change the radiator that leaks and would choose the max cooling (2 core) radiator if it would function better than a single core and if it will fit without modifications, .

 

When you say the "AC fan", do you mean the electric fan that comes on when the AC is on?

If so, no, that's a standard item.

Yes, the vehicle does have the electric fan for the AC. (I thought all the AC equipped models had that fan...but then I don't really know). Are you implying that the max cooling option has more than one AC fan?

 

They all have the mechanical fan/w a clutch. They all have an E-Fan that comes on around 218* if that mech fan doesn't get the job done. The E-Fan is for hill climbing or traffic jambs...times when there is no airspeed to help the mechanical fan with airflow, it comes on when that can't suck enough air through the rad to dump the heat. . (AC really is not the main issue). With everything right, I don't think anything extra is needed. Towing on hills.. I don't know for sure but an aux trans cooler might be in order... Edit/add I just saw you are manual trans. Any "cooler" would be a fan on it!

A stock Rad with a Mopar 195* stat, good pump and fan clutch, and functioning Efan should serve. OH! Don't forget the fan shroud. The main fan can't suck air through the rad well/right without that!

 

OP, you can send your VIN to jeep? and they will send you a list of all options as built on the assembly line. I don't have the link but there is a thread here somewhere.

I have the build sheet sent to me from Chrysler but it doesn't list anything regarding cooling.

I'm considering three options.

1. Retank the existing stock radiator or
2. Replace with an Autozone OEM equivalent base cooling package radiator (one core presuming that is what I have.) or
3. Replace with a two core (max cooling OEM) radiator.

I'm leaning toward a Chrysler 2 core radiator but have questions.

1. WILL THERE BE BENEFIT from changing to a two core max cooling radiator without adding a second electric fan?

2. WILL IT FIT WITHOUT ANY MODIFICATIONS?

 

If the Chrysler build sheet says nothing about heavy duty engine cooling then you don't have it.

 

Radiator effectiveness really has nothing to do with how many cores it has. A two core radiator isn't always better than a single core.

What is important is the radiator volume and fin area. If you can find specs on the two, the more effective radiator - in general - will be the one with more volume and fin area.

If the fan is the same one and if the water pumps are the same then if the radiator fits it should bring it to the max cooling equivalent. Is that sound logic?

 

Yes, I believe the radiator is all that makes the "max cooling" option which is also found on XJs with the tow package. Last year I purchased the max cooling radiator from Mopar and it was a drop in replacement. It was thicker, but fit just fine.

There are many, many factors that go into determining how well a radiator cools. Number of rows is one of the least important.
