I tried to pull out the oil dip stick, and the handle broke off. The broken end is down inside the tube so I can't grab hold of it to pull it out. Now what do I do to fix this? How do I get it out?
First 2 things that popped in my head was to try attaching something with some glue and see if you could pull it out.
Other was maybe try and drill a starter hole and see if you could screw in a wood type screw.
Decided to check the internet and saw both these ideas.
But saw something else:
"Take just a little motor oil and put down the hole. Let it set for a min. Take a shop vac, turn it on and put it over the hole. Use your fingers to make a seal around the tub. The dipstick just sucked up in the shop vac."
I just did this with mine. Put a set of vice grips on the dip stick tube to hold the broken plastic end tight in the tube so it doesn't push down further when you try to drill and tap a screw in there. Then drill a hole in the top of the yellow plastic very carefully, deep enough to get a long descking screw in it. You only need a couple of threads on the screw, then use a pair of pliers to pull it out by the screw. The trick is to keep it from getting further pushed down the tube and the vice grip trick works great.
I highly doubt shavings would get in if youre only drilling in about 1/4". but then again, who knows how much material is in the dipstick to allow for deep drilling. and normally drills pull out shavings if your going slow enough. Maybe just take the safe route and crawl under to remove the 1 screw on the bracket and pull the top part of the dipstick tube out then ram a wire coat hanger from the far end to try and push out the broken piece. Or use an air compressor and air nozzle to blast it out maybe. Safety goggles on.
The way I would get broken dipsticks out is , I get a long screw and heat it up red hot and screw it to the plastic and let it cool down then just pull it out .
