Trying to remove the headliner on the xj it's a 97 there is one of the over head lights in the center and the one on the sound bar.
I've never pulled one on an XJ, but if it's like others, just remove the bezel and you will usually find a speednut securing the fixture.

see the picture.
those "clamps" are kind of pita to remove. I used small pliers and pulled them down while turning-twisting cw/ccw a bit.

I just pulled my head liner. Was a pain in the *** to get the lights off. Mine were held on by little one way friction washers and I ended up just yanking those off with pliers and destroying them.

Permatex ....link: http://www.permatex.com/products/aut...t_Adhesive.htm
is what I used, works great. Autozone has it.
Get two cans!
DO NOT experiment with any other adhesieve that is not designed specifically for headliner/foam material, as it may (and most likely will) destroy the foam.
I actually grabbed the liner right from autozone , they had some generic kits there and had grey color. The problem was that the liner in the kit was a bit shorter than needed for XJ, but I used it anyway, as I have sound-bar at the end, and so the liner reached just about under it, and then I added a foot or so of grey vinyl at the very rear , from under the soundbar to the end, as it was the same vinyl material that I used to cover the soundbar.
You can order the liner material on-line as suggested.
good luck.
