Are we talking front or back? Every Cherokee ever built for the North Amereican Market has the Dana 30 in front, your rear could either be a Chrysler 8.25 or a Dana 35.

Look up some pictures on google if you arent sure which.

like stated, google it and you will find all the images from d30 to d60 and all others in between. i thought all xjs with 4.0/auto were d30/d35s

No, All the ABS and pre ~91 XJ's had D35's (or like some late 80's tow package ones had D44's), MOST, but not all of the other non ABS ones have 8.25's.

I have a 4.0/auto and mine came with a 8.25.

Axle tags are steel and bolted on your diff cover, it might actually still be on there. All they have is your gear ratio, what kind of axle it is, whether you have a limited slip or not and a part number.

If its a Dana 35, don't put any money into it, you can dump a couple grand and get an axle as strong as a stock Dana 44,

To answer your question try this:

If its a mostly on road vehicle or he's running like 32's or under the D35 is perfectly fine. No reason to get rid of it.

Since he said he was getting a locker I'm assuming its gonna get some trail time, but yes for on road a d35 is fine. Its what I got right now, till I get my ford 8.8

If it has a flat bottom to it its a Chrysler, if its got a round bottom its a dana 35, and if its got a Vee shape to it its a Dana 44, but unless someone swapped a 44 in from a 87, its a 35 or chrysler 8 1/4.
