Stupid question but....What is/was the deal with the Dana 35 rears? I'm sure Jeep had to have some reasoning for putting them on some XJs. To cut cost? Increase in MPG? What?

FYI, if you haven't changed out the rear diff fluid, I say the front axle is a lot easier to pry off than the rear axle, and sadly the rear one comes with a plastic cap not metal
The 8.25" is the stronger of the two axles offered on the Cherokee. My '94 is lifted 4.5" (6" Actual) on 33" mudders with stock gears. The Jeep is my daily driver and takes a lot of abuse, and the only problem I have with the rear axle is that I keep blowing the diff seal, which is only a 20 minute job ($4 part.) I would say, from personal experience, their is nothing wrong with lifting a Jeep with an 8.25 tucked under it.

Also to add: If you're worried about your axles being able to take the added strain of a lift and oversized tires, open up the diffs and check out the gears. If the gears are all rounded off and you see metal flakes in the fluid, swap em out. If the gears all look sharp, go for it. While you're at it, feel free to pull the axles on both axles, it's really easy on the d30 and 8.25.

If you contact Jeep at the link above and ask for a build sheet they will send a list of everything your Jeep came with from the factory. It would tell you what axles it left the factory with not really needed in this case but still cool to have.
thank you, that is very neat. i found out some really cool things about my xj

95's would have the 27 spline. To swap to a 29 spline you'd have to gut it and put in new internals. It's be easier to find a 97+ at JY and just pull the rear out of it.

Read the whole thread.......D44's have somewhat of a hexagon shape to them.
