How can I tell what trans I have? I can't find any tags to tell me what it is. I've heard that with the Cherokee only having two different transmissions someone could tell the difference by looking at the floor shifter bc they are different for each trans. I don't know if that's true, please help.

np242 will have two 4wd options: full time and part time. np231 will have only one 4wd high selection: part time.. the 231 is more rugged, but the 242 allows you to be in 4wd on dry pavement...

The Cherokee you are asking about is the 1996 Cherokee you mention on your profile, then you either have an (AW-4) 4 speed automatic tranny or you have an (AX-15) 5 speed manual tranny. That's it...Those were your only choices by the OEM.

o! haha, trans, not TC... my bad! but, yeah, x2 on the aw4/ax15. the aw4 has a 3.55 final and the ax15 has a 3.07 final.

Well I definitely don't have 5 speeds, that would be nice, so I'm guessing I have the 4 speed trans. Thanks guys.

The absence of the clutch pedal is usually a good giveaway that you don't have the 5 speed manual, too...lol.
