My 2001 XJ is suffering from a terrible noise when I turn hard left up any kind of slope. I call it a grinding noise but the mechanic calls it a knocking.
My mechanic can't work it out. I have a slight 'sag' to the rear right (as I sit in the car)
I have changed the leaf's recently, had the front left drive shaft UJ replaced and now the mechanic is changing the front anti roll bar bushes and links.
He deosn't know what to do next - anyone got any ideas?
I spent a long time getting to the bottom of the nasty juddering vibration when turning hard left. Eventually my mechanic worked out it was the gearbox rubber mounting that was worn causing the gearbox to rattle on the chassis and on the body. The picture below is what he fitted and it solved the turning left noise which is great. However since getting it back the car now sounds really rough in reverse and when engine braking in low speeds - especially second. I would say the noise is intermittment but mainly there. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this - I suspect that the new mounting has shifted things and moved a vibration elsewhere but don't really know what to do next
Ah, you've got a Grand Cherokee and not a regular Cherokee (wrong forum). Anyway, you might be feeling more vibration and engine noise if the new engine mount is stiffer. Ideally you want to replace all of the engine mounts and transmission/xfer case mounts at once.
Hi thanks for reply. It's a jeep Cherokee xj. It's difficult to source parts like this in the UK and the mechanic said the part was the same dimensions. I wonder if it isn't now....
The engine and transmission mounts on an XJ don't look like that. Easy enough to pop the hood and see if either the left or right side engine mounts look new. Might be the right size for a substitute for one of the control arm bushings?
Ok Finally worked out what the mechanic replaced it was part number 52058539AB which he couldnt source so put in the Grand cherokee mount which has the same dims (part number 6 below):
Ah, that makes sense now! I didn't realize the trans mount looked like that on the diesel. When the trans mount I'm familiar with on the 4.0l starts sagging it can cause the exhaust pipe to start banging against the support crossmember. Perhaps one of the driveshaft u-joints is marginal and fixing the rear mount and transmission position has made if more noticeable?
Thanks.
We replaced the front left drive shaft UJ (front axle) and enti roll bar bushings looking for the noise before we replaced the transmission mount. I think front right drive shaft UJ was replaced a year ago or so. The mechanic also said he checked the 3 down the centre of the vehicle (We call them prop shaft here in UK) are there other UJs to be checked?
Still not found the issue and was thinking - I did accidentally fit 'toughened' new rear leaf suspension recently. The car is lifted in effect at the back. Is there a chance that this can put things out of line and if so- what shall I check for?
