Well I just got back from a 173 mile trip (one way), on the way there it took 1 & 1/4 tank! That alarmed me but it was pretty windy. On the way back it was good weather and low wind I made the 173 mile trip with only 1/2 a tank!!! THAT WAS AWESOME!!!

If you don't know the miles traveled as measured by a correct odometer, and you don't know the fuel put in by the pump reading, you do NOT know what mileage you are getting.
You folks that are guessing at mileage by how many miles per tank are just fooling yourselves. There are way too many variables and that fuel gauge is way too sloppy for there to be anything resembling an accurate meaure of fuel economy by that method. The best you can do is a rough estimate, and I mean rough. Anybody who says he's getting 12 point something (or whatever) by that method is just announcing that he doesn't have any clue about what he's saying, and doesn't even know he doesn't have a clue. If you're within 3 mpg you're doing good.
By the way, on driving in 3rd gear instead of OD: My commute takes me over the Blue Ridge Mountains via an 11 mile road that runs along the ridge. It goes up and down and up and down. Speed limit is 40, which is just fine for OD on the flats, but it's constantly fighting between OD and 3rd for most of the uphills. It'll bog down in OD, then downshift, and then wind up and upshift.
All that shifting got annoying, so I started cranking it down to 3rd when I turn off the highway and start the climb. Much less shifting, much more comfortable, and what do you know? I picked up about 2 MPG average.
The moral of the story is, OD is not ALWAYS the best for fuel economy.
I track my mileage on each tank, BTW. I have an app on my smartphone that keeps all my service and trip records and gives excellent reports. I always know exactly what mileage I'm getting, and I can look back and see trends. Very nice. It's called aCar, and it's available for Android phones. Don't know about iPhones.
Alright Mark you must think im a damn moron because of my guesstimations and broken speedo....if you would take the time to read instead of skmming through the first page you would see that the speedo has been working for a while now. I take the amount of fuel I pump and the miles I drive and divide that and it gave me that point something figure. Obviously I know that is a rough estimate but thanks for thinking the other guys that dint point out what you did and me are complete idiots.

I was pointing it out for the benefit of you and all the other people reading this thread and the others in this thread commenting about your mileage based on miles per tank, just like you were in the beginning, and just like you were on your last post before I commented. If you're calculating fuel mileage properly, say so, don't talk about how far you went on a tank, or how much of a tank you used on a trip.
Miles per TANK means NOTHING, and it's a mistake I see a LOT on Jeep forums. I see people making expen$ive decisions about buying parts and paying shops to have work done based on GARBAGE information, because that kind of garbage is tossed around these forums like its gold.
It's a shame to see people wasting their time and money because they don't know any better.
Nobody's a moron just because they don't know something. We ALL have a lot to learn. What makes a person a moron is refusing to learn. If you want to wear that shoe, go right ahead. That's your choice. I'm not putting it on you.
