Default Hood Spacers

I am thinking of putting hood spacers between the hinges and the hood as opposed to cutting holes in my hood. Any suggestions as to how much space would be good? I want it to be functional but not look to stupid.

You need atleast 3/4 inch for the hood to break the air tight sill.
