Default Hood insulation

or at least I think it is some kind of insulation....
I have this thick carpet like fabric lining the inside of my hood.
It looks like it has been torn in some parts, especially around the engine fan (that doesn't have a cover by the way).

I am wondering if this carpeting/insulation has any function (and what it would be) because I see everywhere overheating problems in other threads and I think this would restrain heat flow in the engine...

My question is can I / should I remove it or is it really something desirable to keep.

thanks for your insights.

My son in law has an 89 Laredo and his does not have anything for insulation. IMO I would take it off so it runs cooler...Tj

PS If you want it to run even cooler put some hood vents on it. I did...

Under-hood insulation is mainly there to help keep noise levels down. It's a comfort thing. If you don't care, then go ahead and take it out.

It is also there to collect all of the dirty, grimey, cruddy stuff that is thrown from the fan while driving. Then it will neatly deposit all of that junk in your hair and on the back of your shirt when you go to work under the hood. It works very effective at it's job!

If you're not getting dirty working on your Jeep, you're not doing it right.

ive kept mine on my 87 and even cut parts of it out for my lebaron hood vents. I just assumed it helped to protect the paint on the hood from the heat. I could be completely wrong but its something to think about.

From what I understand that stuff is supposed to help put out an engine fire if it ever happens on any vehicle.
