Welcome to the Cherokee Forum!

Your 87 is going to have whats called a Renix 4.0l. The HO started in 91 and is pretty much a re-badge from when Chrysler took over production of the 4.0. The HO is rated at 1 ft. lb. of torque and 13 hp over your Renix. Do a google search for Jeep XJ and you'll get a bunch of info - first piece of advise to every newbie, always search first.

You'll have to forgive us but with a question that common people tend to just tell you to search instead of just answering.

Not a big difference, don't concern yourself that its not HO.

Welcome to the site.
