One thing you can check is at the brake peddle there is a stop the hit the peddle are, Make sure that it isn't bent. If so you should be able to bend it back into the correct position.

A lot of times it just gets weak over time and start to bend. I have had a few old cars that it has happened to. That is the only reason that was the first thing that came to mind.

So there's a band or brace that must have worn out that usually holds it lower?

Nothing holds brake pedal up. Guys remove the clip on booster rod and it will fall to floorboard. Might be someone upgraded to double diaphragm booster which with certain boosters pedal will be higher than factory .

Not sure about your year, but my 1998 XJ's booster has an adjustable rod inside it. It is accessible by removing the master cylinder from the booster.

I recently changed my old one out, and the new one had a lower pedal height.

It's a pain to take it all back off again, but worth it to get it how you want.

Also the brake light switch on mine needed to be reset and is done just by pulling the little plunger back out. It will then re-adjust itself. That switch can be dismounted by turning it a 1/4 turn.

This sounds like the reason because the po mentioned the brake system had been upgraded

Default Glad I’m not the only one

I know I’m responding to an OLD post…..but the pain is real. 😀

I just recently bought my first XJ….a 2001 Sport that is almost entirely un-modified. The brake pedal is obnoxiously high and I need to change it soon. Has anyone found a fix for this??

The attached picture shows the height difference between the gas pedal and the brake pedal……there is no way this is what it was like from the factory.

Big difference in pedal height and size is why people didn't use to drive through the front window of cafes and book stores.

I'll say it: There is NO sudden uncontrolled acceleration caused by the vehicle, never was. It's people pushing the wrong pedal by mistake and then they panic and push harder.

Someone might have put a booster on from another Jeep. Can't imagine why because your year already had the dual diaphragm booster stock.

Take a peek up where the pedal attaches to the booster. A pic would help us also.
