Sounds kinda high priced to me but your JY may have higher prices than around here. Here the pickin's are getting kinda slim for XJs.

Hi9's are always high priced. But that does seem kinda high, now for the 35 spline that's right on par with any diff set up. How high lift are you going with? I'd say if it isn't say 8 or more go with the 35 spline and never worry about a shaft again...

There's a couple different Hi9's out.
Hope I'm not misleading you on this, I should refresh my mind on the research I did in the past, but..... IIRC
Currie has it's Hi 9, and it uses a 8.8" ring gear.
Then there's the True Hi9 differential which uses a 9" ring gear and also has ring gear supports built into the case. I've heard nothing but good things about them and the one we installed in a budiies TJ is holding up to some hard core stuff.
Can't help you on pricing, I haven't looked that far into it.
Both of those will bolt into a stock 9" housing or there are several options for aftermarket high clearance housings like the Currie and Spidertrax housings.
Both of these have much more clearance then a stock Ford 9" differential which is a low pinion differential, still very strong, they are generally considered to be as strong as a D60, I run a stock one and I do have a little less clearance then say a D44, but it's not that much of a problem, and with a shaved housing, it would be almost the same as a D44.
35 spline axles are good insurance if you're gonna run 37's, but stock spline alloy axles would probably hold up to 37's just fine too.
Hope that helps, Terry
