alot of people mount them on the hood by the windshield... i dont like that because if you get in a wreck that hi lift is gona come flyin at your face (not good)

i mounted mine on my surco rack with the hi lift mount kit:

if you have no rack you can mount it to your front or rear bumper...

if you dont have a rear hitch you could probably fab something up to go under the bumper by the gas tank or on the rear bumper itself. Just a thought as I was reading this as I have heard of other guys doing it, never actually seen it tho...There are rear bumper/tire carriers made that you can mount one to along with a gas can...

One more thing I just thought of, if you keep your rear seat down you could mount it on the floor next to the wheel well or you could even go up high on the trim in the upper corner by fabbing up some brackets that screw into the trim...

keeping it in the rig is good thinking, and will ensure it works right when you need to use it... I hate highlifts mounted exposed to the elements...
I lay mine at the very back, on the floor... just ahead of where the hatch latches and ratchet strap it down... I've added tie down points.
