yes, you should use a renix box. it is identified by a flap in the intake opening and solid metal clips to hold the top on.
the air tube should have a mount with 3 holes to bolt it onto the throttle body.

i should have a spare one here, but not sure if i tossed it yet. plus the cost of shipping would be more than what you can get one for from a wrecker.

that is the longest run-on sentence I've ever seen. It also sounds like you got some other problems going on under the hood.

My Renix Jeeps run just fine with the airbox disconnected. I suggest finding a different mechanic if what you're telling us is exactly what he told you.

Try up at harry's u-pull-it in allentown or go all the way out to the one near harrisburg. You might find something in either one of those. A little out of the way for philly, but worth a shot if you can't find one on e-bay anywhere. I don't know of any place around me to find a renix air box, other wise I would scope one out for ya.

i ran my renix for 10 years with a cheap made up CAI that only consisted of a stock air tube with a k&n filter attached to the end.
hoses hung free. passed emissions every time.

only reason i put in an airbox was to add my snorkel.

I'll bet the problem is your TPS. The air cleaner will not cause a 3,000 RPM idle.
