help won't start 96 cher. country
Well I don't know what to do next . When this started a couple days ago it seemed to be water in the gas like it jurked and missed, spit and sputter so i put dry gas in no help then it just quit and no fire so i thought coil . put new one on no go then when i checked fuses out on finder well there was a little one 30 amp that was blowed when replaced it it started but still missed and sounding like water in the gas after pulling codes said crankshaft sensor the one on the trans where bolts to the engine so replace that no go, it also said that oxygen sensor was bad but didn't replace it because i don't think it would cause it to have no fire?any way here i sit all broke and confused still no fire and wont start the asd relay is making a clicking noise so switched it with another one still no go so I'm out of ideas can anyone help me this rolling paper weight is a 1996 jeep cher. country with a 4.0 engine auto trans

49 psi +/- is fine for fuel pressure....if you think that you have water in the gas get a glass and get some fuel fron the fuel rail and see if it seperates into gas and water.

when i talk to mechanics they tell me it can only be three things left the pcm or the thing under the distributer or a asd relay well that don't seem right to me but all i can tell ya is i'd like to be sure of what it is before throwing more money at it and hoping i get it right i heard the pcm is very exspensive

Let's review basics. You have no spark. That initial test is telling the story.
1. You have replaced the crank sensor and the ignition coil
2. You have swapped the ASD relay with another relay
Did you thoroughly inspect the wiring/connector for the crank sensor? Cleaning the crank sensor connector with a spray of electrical contact cleaner and adding a bit of dielectric grease is also recommended as these connectors are prone to crud which = resistance.
Don't throw any more parts at this. It is terribly inefficient and as you are finding, gets expensive in a hurry.
The thing the mechanic was referring to inside the distributor is called the "camshaft position sensor". If it fails in a certain way (more rare), it can inhibit spark. It can be tested with a meter and a manual with the procedure.
Early in the thread you said you got a code for the crank sensor (a tip is to post the EXACT codes here for most accurate replies). Generally, those codes can refer either to the crank sensor OR the cam sensor. Test your cam sensor.
If cam sensor checks out, it is possible that you have an ignition switch problem. The ignition switch sends juice to the ASD relay and if the ASD relay truly is "clicking", what you are hearing isn't normal so the ignition switch or the route between that and the socket on the power distribution center for the ASD relay is also a suspect.
The PCM is generally pretty hardy. Yes it can result in a no-spark, but the way I approach the PCM is by diagnosis of exclusion. Which means, I rule out EVERY OTHER possibility first, because the PCM is low on the suspect list. I can't tell you how many vehicles I worked on where the owner replaced the PCM early in the troubleshooting process with no change in symptoms.

the codes i got is P1391 crankshaft position sensor and P0138 oxygen sensor well when i replaced the cps and tried to start no spark then tried to read the codes again and i couldn't get a read on anything said error or just didn't do any thing i'm going to look for a short in harness and yes the cps connectors looked real clean but i will put some connection grease on them for better contact. When i get done looking for a short i'll reply back and hopefully it will be good news
ps the key switch is a there a way to make sure that its not the problem I replaced it about four years ago the old one was good i just turned to hard on it and broke it so the new one is only around four, do you think it could still be the problem
pss the thing under the distributor is it called the ignition pickup on the 96 cher.
