It's not as bad as you would think. Just siphon out the gas first. I've seen more than one person on here have their cherokee go up in flames because they didn't bother to drain the gas out.
Yeah, your filter is in your tank. When you remove the locking ring, make sure you use a BRASS punch. That way there will be no sparks and no "Earth shattering ka-boom" as Marvin the Martian would say. What some people do not realize is gasoline actually lubricates your fuel pump. When you run yourself out of gas it can burn your fuel pump up.

Yeah, that is what I am afraid of. But it sounds normal so I have thinking crud in the tank or some electrical issue. The light had just come on when it ran out so I also think the float level is incorrect.
not sure if this has been said already but did you push the little shrader valve on the fuel rail to let out any vapor trapped in there? i ran out of gas before and it wouldn't start until i did that

Ok, i got it started and it stayed running. But I held it at 1500 rpm and could here it sputter once or twice. I am afraid to drive it. I think I am going to replace the filter. I have a Haynes manual that says I can pull the pump without removing the tank. I just need to siphon the gas out first. I need this thin to run ASAP. If I pull the tank, how do I clean it? Do I need to take it somewhere or can I just wash it out? Sounds like a longer process but if that is what needs to be done, then that is what I will do.

Before you drop the tank get some GOOD gas in it, if someone brought you 2 gallons of questionable gas you might save yourself a lot of time by putting 5 gallons of gas and some http://www.goldeagle.com/brands/stabil/ in the tank.
If it's still not running right you're only out the cost of 5 gallons of gas and a bottle of stabil.

I have thinking about that as well. It does idle when it runs. When it dies, it is like someone turned the key off. I wonder if it is bag gas, would it act like that or would it sputter and slowly die?
Bad gas = sputtering. Running out of gas = sputtering or sort of bucking.
My Jeep had a similar issue any time my fuel light came on, it would simply just die..Rpm's would fall without any sputter, bucking or anything. Its a 88/89.
I dropped the tank cleaned it, there was a nice layer of crud on the buttom, and changed the fuel pump and filter.
I also did the mod so it'll hold an extra 5 gallons of gas..look for the go-jeep write if your interested in it.
Anyway after I replaced the pump & filter and cleaned the tank, the issue disappeared. Idk what my issue was, maybe once the fuel got done so low the fuel pump suck it up or couldn't supply enough? Or maybe because it was watery gas?
