No the are mounted on the inside of the drivers side frame rail above the rear axle, atleast that's where it should be. It's only like a $10 part and easy to change

Everything I am reading on line says it is in the tank on the 99. I guess they changed it in 97 from the frame rail to the tank. If I have to drop the tank, I want to replace everything at once so I don't have to do it again. Just need to figure out which pump I have.

Fuel pump is DEFINITELY inside of the gas tank on a 99. I have a 99 and have replaced mine.
If you have to go that route (and as mentioned, verify verify before dropping the tank), I highly recommend a Bosch fuel pump assembly. Bosch is the best in the business when it comes to fuel pumps. Carter is my second brand choice. Airtex is NOT even a choice for me. I wouldn't put one in if they were giving them away.
Put in the whole assembly and you get the pump/regulator/filter/sending unit.....everything. I'd recommend doing that, especially if there are a few miles on this fuel pump.

If you're going to have to drop the tank to clear gunk away from the filter you better just put a new pump in while you're there. That'd be very foolish to just do a filter or something. Airtex is complete garbage! Highly recommend Bosch pumps. Just my .02

Fuel pump is new. Bought and installed since 4 months ago. Crank and cam sensors replaced last week and still the same issue.
Engine start very good anytime, but that failure sounds like fuel outtage and the rig have a little less than 1/2 a tank. Failure occurs not always. Sometimes run smooth, sometimes failure occurs a coupe of time or more.
Map sensor changed 6 months ago, tested on another JX and it's working good, also crank and cam sensors.
Going to check the harness and see what happens.

This is driving me crazy. I went to bang on it with a hammer, then go to start it. Same thing. It starts right up, runs for about 30 seconds then dies. Doesn't even sputter and die, just instant off. Go to start it back up and it sputters but won't start unless I cycle the key a couple times. I can hear the fuel pump and it sounds normal.
Now my battery is dead so it sits in my driveway on a charger while I sit at home not working.

Whats weird is that it doesn't sputter and die like it is starving for fuel. It just dies. My alternator says 14 volts when it is running, I charged the battery and cleaned the terminals. Also cleaned the ground wire athe body. Doesn't this sound like an electrical short somewhere?
