Default Help Please

Hello folks, i have a Jeep cherokee 2.5td on a 2000 plate. Yesterday i was driving down a track in first/second gear, the Check Gauges light came on, the oil temp went to 0, then the vehicle switched off.

I lifted the bonnet, coolant was at the right level, oil a little low. I topped the oil up. The car after 15 minutes started, however the Check Gauges light is still on, and the oil temp goes up and down when i drove it home.

What could this be? Ive had the vehicle 2yrs, serviced each year, last winter it had oil and filter change, disks and alternator belt fitted.

When i spoke to my wife, she stated that the light came on in april, oil was a little low, so she topped it up, however the engine did not cut off, but the oil temp was going up and down erratically, again the coolant was fine.

I'm from the uk, so i'm hoping you may help, or guide me the right way.

Cheers.

Turn the key on-off-on-off-on and count the number of times it blinks. Count the times it beeps as one number then there should be a pause than that will be the second number.

its an easy way to tell what your check engine light is trying to say.

do as he said, at the end there will be 5 flashes then 5 flashes. that signifies the end of the sequence.

EDIT: if you have a 2000, then you follow instructions for OBDII not OBDI diagnostics.

Just did that, there were 4 bleeps after the on off on off on sequence. The Check Gauge has not flashed, but remained on.

If all your gauges died, one possibility is a problem with your alternator. The original Check Engine Gauges warning light may have been for your charging gauge. The fact that all the gauges died and the engine shut down suggests an alternator problem to me. You may not be cranking enough amps to provide the electricity to run your car including your gauges. Your gauges will shut down along with your air conditioning and radio before your engine will eventually die if your alternator is not producing enough amps. Sooner or later, your battery will die if the alternator is the problem because it's not getting recharged. If your serpentine belt is tight and turning the alternator, then the problem within the alternator could be worn out brushes. Good luck! Keep us posted on your progress.

do you have any traces of oil in the coolant? Your oil cooler may have failed. There is also a sensor on the radiator just for the oil temp after cooling and the sensor may be failing..

P.S. Welcome to CF

The only gauge that died was the oil pressure gauge, then the engine turned off. After 15mins or so i tried it and it started straight away. I have only had the alterantor belt changed 2 weeks ago, however the oil pressure gauge and light came on before the belt was changed approx 3 weeks before.
This evening i was driving it to the shops, the gauge went to 0 again, i then stopped the vehicle and turned it off. I then couldnt start it for another 15 mins.

If you do the key trick you shouldn't have to worry about counting the check engine light flashing aslong as you have a digital odometer. You have turn the key on off on off on then leave it in the on position. The check engine light I think will flash the code but also it should display it where your odometer is assuming you have a digital one. It will display numbers with semi long pause between them while your CEL flashes the code at you. The last number you should see is 55 which means end of codes. Go to that link that was posted earlier and check for the numbers. BTW the key turning sequence has to be within 5 seconds or it will not work. I've had nothing but problems with my jeep lately so I do this trick almost daily.
