Would a 242 out of a 1990 xj work in my 88 xj??

More than likely. The input spline count on 87 to 90 should be 21 splines. Just be aware that some folks think the 23 splines came out in 90 and not 91. Check first. Your 88 has 21 splines for sure.

How do I check it what shaft do I look at
Is there anyway to check it inside the jeep or does it need to be pulled first

Pulled. Count splines.
