Mine takes a longer time to shift when its cold...I think that is normal? What RPM does it shift to second at, when accelerating normally? (not on it hard or anything)

sounds like shift linkage is out of adjustment not the solenoid if it was the solenoid it would do it in all gears when its cold i would do it if its not a bad looking xj and the motor and tranny other than that seems strong i would mine did the same thing i readjusted the cable under the hood and it fixed it

Take it for a test drive and see how it drives. Postal Jeep, driven at low speeds everyday......could have many problems waiting to surface. But also could be very good project jeep.

Well I work at a Nuc plant and we have security trucks we drive around all day at very low speeds, all day, every day. For what ever reason the engines tend to go bad after a year and I've been told its because gas engines dont do well at low speeds. I dont have any proof to back this up, but just take a good look at the moving parts before you do the trade, maybe even tkae it to a shop to have them look at it while you have it on a test drive.
Also postal jeeps could also be subjected to more road salt (depnds on local area) than most trucks, so check under the jeep for rust.

My 2000 and 1988 shift fine whether cold or hot so use your own judgement. It needs the solienoid 's replaced for starters, and a fluid and filter change for sure. And to ask if the tranny is going to go out on you well come on we aren't able to tell you that.
