!!! Help the Newbie !!! Please......
I have a 1996 Cherokee Sport 4wd. Sometimes it starts and runs good and sometimes I turn the key and nothing happens at all. After switching relays wiggling wires and looking over fuses nothing still happens. After sitting there frustrated for a few minutes for no ryme or reason it will start as normal. I was told it could be the ignition switch I replaced it and still nothing. It has the Toyota Transmission or the drain plug tranny. in it. I have checked the battery connection and it's good. Could this be the n.s.s? Please help, I am a Jeep green horn. I work on Subarus.

Next time the Jeep won't start for you, Shift it to Nuetral and see if it starts. Or just give the shifter a good healthy slap forward from behind with it still in Park. If it starts either way then it is most likely is a bad NSS. some guys have had good luck with cleaning the NSS. Mine was messing up and I removed it, took it apart and cleaned it and it has worked good since. That was like 6-7 months ago.

Alot of times if its for no rime or reason it seems to be a resistor. In an xj its usualy the one for the fuel pump. Its located on the driverside inner fender. that little bar with two wires going to it that "looks " absoluteley pointless. You can just bypass it to see if thats the problem but I heard it causes problems if you run it that way for long periods of time.

Was there any specific time the jeep started acting up? when you bought it did it do the same thing?
if you took it through deep water or went "MUDDIN!" recently and it started after that, the i'd vnture to say its a Neutral Safety Switch, Crankshaft Position Sensor, outside of that check your coil, starter, and applicable wires.
my friend recently got stuck in some deep *** mud and his starter alternator went out and he had to change his oil on top of that. MUD is the debil!

I would say the starter.I had the same problem, At first i just thought that it was loose wires on my starter cuz everytime it wouldnt start i would wiggle the starter wires and it would start til one day i did it a few times and it didnt work. I hit it with a hammer and sure enough it started. I got a new starter and starts up everytime now.
