Default HELP - keyless entry program for 1999 Cherokee

I just bought a 1999 jeep cherokee which did not come with a remote keyless entry fob. I have 2 fobs from previous jeep cherokees that i have owned, and they are the correct type.
Hopefully it's a simple program sequence that i can perform without a dealer needing to get involved.

Can anyout out there help me with the 'super secret code'?

From what I've gathered researching this myself is that 97+ requires a dealer or locksmith to plug in and program,96 and older is the ones you can program yourself.

97 xjbrian,
i found one possible code sequence that i will try later today, but if what you stated is correct, then it is off to the dealer...
Thanks for the feedback.

I didn't know I had keyless entry either till I requested a build sheet (no fob with the Jeep). I ended up having to take it to a Stealership and have it done 2 min finished $40.

Correct, 1997+ requires programming by dealer using a plug in scanner.

OK - I've since learned that although I have power locks my xj (as i believe they all do), it DID NOT come with keyless entry. I've also learned that the keyless entry is located in the dome light on the headliner (or some protion of it - computer panel board?) . Since there are already power locks, if I pick up the correct overhead dome light for the keyless at the JY or e-bay, and use my leftover keyless fobs (same era) and have them programed, will this be all that i need, besides the headache of wiring?

Getting closer...

Probably going to be much cheaper and easier going aftermarket. My fobs quit, so i installed this:

Amazon.com : Viper 211HV 1-Way Keyless Entry System : Vehicle Keyless Entry : Car Electronics Amazon.com : Viper 211HV 1-Way Keyless Entry System : Vehicle Keyless Entry : Car Electronics

Yeah, I'm sure you're right on that one. I love OEM - Stock parts and I want everythig as close to factory as possible on my Jeep (can you say OCD?). I was hoping to use my Jeep fobs instead of something else, but in the end it realy doesn't matter. I often say that i find it easier to do things the hard way!
I'll wait to see if anyone chimes in on the wiring harness, but it looks like it is going to be an aftermarket version. The Viper that you have looks pretty good, was it though to install?

"was it though to install?"
What is your level of 12V electrical experience?

Turbo XJ - if you count all my fingers and subtract 10 you will get zero which equals 12V electrical experience...so sadly the answer is none(!).

Fairly easy to install. all the wiring needed was under the drivers-side kickpanel.

Connections include 12v constant, 12v switched, door locks, dome light, horn, & parking lights.

I used this as a guide
http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/...tail/1212.html

took a few hours, only because i am meticulous and soldered all connections.

Woah woah woah. Am I to understand that I might actually have keyless entry?! New-to-me 99 only came with one key, no fob. DumbQ1: what is a build sheet; DQ2: where do they come from; and is that the only way to figure that out?

Request a build sheet from Jeep, free and a reply within 24 hours.

You likely have the wiring harness already installed, or at least the connector to plug in a harness. Would require a peek under the front of headliner, near rear-view mirror.
If the harness is not there, the connector would be under the dash, driver side. Mine has three empty connectors, one is for footwell lights, another for dash speakers, and the third I have not figured out yet.

Dealt with this last year.

Went by the dealer. The dealer wanted $90 for a key fob. $40 to program it.

I ended up buying a used key fob and matching computer board from someone on here for $50. At that point it's plug-n-play in the dome light.

If anyone doesn't have keyless from the factory and plans to go to the dealer to get the fob I have my original keyless computer I'll sell ya for $10 + shipping. (You'd have to buy a key fob)

Just find a keyless circuit board at the junk yard and install it in the dome light. Take the Jeep to a dealer and get it programmed. My local dealer quoted me $20 over the phone but did it for free when I got there and I'm not a regular customer.
