Default Help identifying a part

I have 1990 Jeep Cherokee XJ 2 door Sport. I’m trying to identify a part under my hood. I just going to sorry ahead of time. I know no one likes night pictures but this is what I have. I’m trying to figure out why it is so hot and if I should replace it.

This is the part I’m trying to identify. It is the one with the yellow arrow.

It is right next to the air box on the fender well.

As you can see from the heat gauge. It is really hot.

X2, Fuel pump ballast resistor. They get warm and dissipate heat into the fender and will get hot if not attached to the fender. They definitely should not be 300* degrees! When they fail, they develop high resistance or break internally and you have fuel pressure problems after you release the key after the initial cranking.

It's only there to reduce the voltage to the fuel pump after starting. Earlier Renix era Jeeps didn't have it. It was added later to address complaints about the fuel pump being noisy, and you can eliminate it by simply connecting the two wires together. I would measure the current going through it first, to make sure you don't have a short somewhere or a bad fuel pump pulling excessive current. I think the fuel pump pulls anywhere between 4 and 7 amps.
