i don't sell horses (jk ), but i would probably stick with the 4.0 and maybe stroke it to 4.7 for more power. from what i've seen 318 doesn't get the world's greatest gas mileage. my buddy's ZJ with a 5.2 gets about 16mpg stock. and the 3.7 in my dakota can keep up with the 5.2 in my buddy's dakota all day long. the only difference is i get 21mpg and he gets 17mpg.

http://www.jeep4.0performance.4mg.com/stroker.html Stroke it itll cost you a little more than a rebuild if you use 4.2 rods, if you use the 4.0 rods you are looking at $5-600 just for pistons. Also check this site out http://www.jeepstrokers.com/forum/index.php

X2 on stroking it. Also the 1990 model did not come with the 4.0 H.O., it should be a Renix.

Renix engines are a little more desireable because of the knock sensors just swap a HO head to get the full potenial out of it.

But don't people put 4.3L Chevrolets in Cherokees often enough? A V8 may be a little tight depending on its angle, but the 318 is a robust powerplant. However, in my opinion, if I wanted anything other than my 4.0, I'd buy another vehicle. Love the 4.0.

4.3 swaps aren't common in any XJ's except the ones that came with the old gm 2.8L in the 80's
