Default Help: Dana 44 swap for 35

As posted in some other treads, I need a new rear axle for my 89 cherokee, equipped with a Dana 35c 3.55. I have a line on a Dana 44 from an 88. I think the axle swap is no problem but are drive shaft modifications required becasue of the Dana 44 or is it all 'bolt on"? The 44 is more than I want to spend and if it's not a 'bolt on' option, that would kill the deal for me. Thanks for any advice.

It's a direct swap, no mods needed.

your driveshaft will be pushed in your transfercase a little due to a longer pinion on the dana 44, but you should be fine

Maybe he should grab the drive line too, just in case. Also, you are probably going to want to put brake shoes on the 44 also.

just remember to get the spring plates and the ubolts as well. The center pins for the 44 use bigger heads but i would grab them too while your in there. as said the drive shaft will be an inch to long but will work just dont go jumping the jeep.

Hi Mark:

Thanks for your note. I picked up the 44. Have the U bolts but not the nuts, spring plates, or the centre pins. Can you clarify what you mean by the 44 center pins having bigger heads?

The head on the center pin bolt is larger than that on the d35.
