Okay so i got a 99 jeep Cherokee today and like a good new owner the first thing i do is change the oil. so i change the oil and put the new filter on. go to start it up and its leaking like crazy from where the oil filter meets the oil filter housing.The old oil filter was on ungodly tight......So on the new oil filter after it leaked i put it on crazy tight.Still leaked so i though hmm maybe the old gasket is stuck on there or the new filter got double gasketed. so i took the new filter off and it didnt have either of those..... so i checked the threads on the adapter and they are not cross threaded. so i put the old filter on and it leaked too??HELPPPP???????I have never in my life had a problem changing the oil before???? has any one else had this problem???

 

O - ring .

 

You really don't need to tighten it on much at all when you put a new filter on. Sounds like the o-ring was damaged when you put it on (and I guarantee the old gasket was damaged by the PO)

General rule is you tighten it as much as you can by hand and if you're feeling generous, MAYBE a quarter turn more with an oil filter wrench. No more than that though

 

Only needs to go 3/4 of a turn after the oring touches the mating surface. Never use a wrench to tighten, never use grease on the oring, and always lightly lube the oring with oil before installing the filter. It does not even have to be clean oil on the oring, just a little oil will do.

 

Yep. Filter is distorted from being overtightened. This^^ is the correct procedure.

Go get a new filter. Get a Wix, Napa, or Mopar.
