Default Help!! Coolant overflow problem!!

So today after about a half hr worth of driving I got home and noticed my 94 xj was dumping coolant out of the radiator cap. My temp gauge in the cab is reading about 210-220 at normal operating temperature so I don't think the rig is overheating. Anybody have any clue as to why coolant would be spilling out the cap? I went ahead and bought some coolant flush and new coolant and am gonna do a flush to see if that helps anything. I just don't wanna be driving around with a coolant problem and kill the engine with heat. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I currently happen to have this issue. XJs just run hot. The cheapest fix will be to make sure your engine oil is full, and/or flush your radiator/engine. You can check your thermostat to ensure it still opens (mine didn't, oops). One fix folks like to say is to replace the overflow tank...

If coolant is coming out of a '94 at the rad cap, the cap is bad, rad neck is cracked, somehow it's not sealing properly. If the system is actually overheated and boiling out, it should only come out at the overflow bottle.

I changed the oil yesterday. Today I'm gonna flush the radiator and check the thermostat. Hopefully that'll solve the problem

Thanks man. So your saying if the engine was overheating and my temp gauge was off I'd be able to tell b/c the coolant would be coming out of the overflow tank and not the radiator itself? But since its spilling from the radiator cap there is no overheating just a bad cap?

Again, thanks for the help guys!!

Check out your radiator, This is out of my 97 XJ. It didnt leak but it sure ran hot. I got a brand new aluminum radiator from advance auto for $110.00, cant beat that seeing all the junkyard radiators were just as bad as mine....

Get a new rad cap/inspect the neck of the rad. Coolant should never come out at the rad cap on an open system, like a '94. If pressure exceeds the rad cap rating, coolant/pressure will escape the rad and flow to the coolant recovery/overflow bottle via that small rubber tube. If the overflow bottle fills up, coolant will flow out of it and onto the ground. That's some major overheating if the overflow bottle overflows.

Went down to Autozone and picked up a new cap for $5 and that solved the problem I was happy! Thanks guys for helping me out. I'm pretty new to jeeps and this forum and am impressed with everyone's behavior here. I think I'll stay around.
