Default help with clutch

Hello, newbie here with a quick question. I have an 91 cherokee that i think the slave cylinder is out on. ax15 transmission. almost impossible to put into gear, grinds like a *****, and then sometimes will go right into gear no problem-clutch and slave are about 3 years old and have 20k miles. Clutch pedal does feel soft. Does this sound like a slave cylinder? is this common on an ax15? this has an internal slave and i am hopping that it could be something else. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

it is possible that it is at the first stages of going out,if you push in the clutch and wait for a few seconds does that help with the grinding?

It definitely sounds like a hydraulics issue. I need some more info though: have you checked your fluid level in the master cylinder? do you see any leaks in the line? also, did you check the fluid level in the transmission? you can get some grinding if your tranny fluid is low. does this happen in all gears? lastly, when you have the clutch pressed and it is in gear does it grab right off the floor?

fluid level full---does grab almost to floor-no evidence of leaks, that i can see. tranny level is full.

if it grabs off the floor then the hydraulics are going out. If you don't see any leaks on the master or in the line then I would bet it is the slave. Sorry to break it to you. If you're going to drop the tranny to fix it, I would suggest doing a conversion to the external slave. You can do it with junk yard parts pretty easy. It took me 20 min to replace my external slave, bled the system and everything.

the ax-15 was the strongest tranny jeep ever used. if you had an external slave you would love it. (unless you hate driving stick of course).

i have had alot of bad luck with this transmission. i have driven stick all of my life and for some reason i have replaced or rebuilt this transmission 3 times. keep having shift forks wear. I keep the proper fluid in it and dont race it and i dont off road in that much-usually only during hunting seasons. Everyone says the ax 15 is strong and will even hold up to chevy v8 power, i am not impressed-i have always wanted to convert it to an turbo 350 or 400 chevy automatic, just dont have the time or money.
