I've never tried just a breaker bar.

I recently tore into an 8.25 for practice but I used the air impact wrench.

If I was to try it with a breaker bar, I would 'park" the jeep with the tires up on those ramps then drop the drive shaft using the weight of the vehicle/wheels to hold it in place.

I know the FSM says to use a special tool to hold the yoke as you break the nut loose with a breaker bar.

Another thing is to use a longer breaker bar, I have had to put a piece of pipe over a breaker bar in the past to extend the handle and get more leverage.

I always used a impact. A shop will charge bout a hours labor to do the seal.

If you can get it hot it will come off with less torque. Hit it with some PB Blaster. Then later after you and it cool down, try it again. Just getting it hot-cold -hot might help it let go. A cheater pipe might help, (or brake the breaker). Don't wrench it off the block and run yourself over. I hate when that happens.

I believe it's 1 1/8 I just did this a few days ago on the zj pita. Use an impact and I had to have the truck wedged between the house and the xj just be patient

I had to pull the pinion nut off of a 8.25 with only a breaker bar and I cheated. I took the bottle jack from under the rear seat and used it to apply the extra force by placing the end of the breaker bar on the jack and cranking it up. Once it breaks loose then turning by hand becomes much easier.

A little tip that works very well. Get an axtra crank handle for the jack from the junkyard and cut it down to about 12-15 inches long. Grind three flat sides on the cut end so that a cordless drill will be able to grip it. It makes life a lot easier when using the bottle jack if the drill can do all the work in 1/10 of the time it takes to sweat your *** off cranking it by hand.

Does the oil seal come out with a screwdriver OK or did you need a tool for it?

I think 97+ have a 1 1/4 and older models have 1 1/8 ... I have a 2001 and it was 1 1/4 or 32mm both worked

I used a screwdriver and a hammer it worked fine just make sure your only hitting the seal but the tool would have been a lot easier!
