I did a search and an advanced search. I must be inputting wrong key words cause I’m coming up short.
I’m looking for a detailed thread on A/C rebuild for 99 XJ.
Discharge, parts replace, especially getting the right amount of oil back in.
Not trusting the last owners ability to get anything right. He had tools and no common sense.
I know the compressor has oil and there should be some in the accumulator/drier.
Not trusting what last owner put in. Track record is all the other botched work he did.
Any knowledge is appreciated.

 

If you have reason to believe the amount of oil is way out of whack the only way to really be sure it is right it is to get all the old oil out and put in the proper amount of fresh stuff. The way to do this is to dump the oil out of the compressor, replace the drier, and flush out the other components. Then add in the factory-specified amount of oil and refrigerant. It's a PITA but when done you'll know it's right. Don't leave the oil exposed to atmosphere very long since it readily absorbs moisture that will not be released when you pull vacuum.

 

Hey guys, when you get a new compressor it probably has oil in it. However, there are no oil rings in the compressor so it looses that oil to the refrigerant when the crank case becomes pressurized. The oil is dissolved into the refrigerant and acts as a lubricant when the compressor pumps. You will find no oil, or very little if any in the compressor itself. It is not like an air compressor. Yes, you can get some in the accumulator, but for the most part it is in the refrigerant. That is why when it leaks out somewhere, there is an oil stain at that location.

 

Way easier and a lot less aggravating to take it to a professional.
