I think he means buy a cheapo little car so that you are able to take your time in finding the right xj and not just buy one somewhat out of desperation. Look at a few take them for a test drive and look them over well. Websites I frequent for finding Cherokees are:
Cargurus.com and Autoexpoli.com. Much better selections than Craigslist.

A newer Honda or Toyota isn't going to need everything the Jeep will need to be a reliable daily driver. BONUS: It isn't what you want, so you'll be picky, and make a wise decision.
Right now, you want a Jeep, and you want a Jeep, you want a Jeep, and winter is coming on, and it will be very easy for you to talk yourself into a mistake.
With a reliable DD in hand, you can take your time and find the RIGHT one. You won't be desperate.

I'm on my second 98 and would never buy another year. If you look on Wikipedia they list the year by year changes made to the design. A Lil newer. Easier to find one with less miles and easier to find parts during the next 10 years.
The interior is a little nicer. Read: 2 cup holders.
Research what year heads were bad.
And as far as stick vs auto... your call. I find auto easier to rock in the snow. And one hand free for my coffee. Plus, they're cheaper.

so i went check out that Cherokee and let me tell you its clean, in and out. But the rear seal is leaking and has a clicking noise when turning sharp. I took it for a spin and 4x4 works fine. Told him ill let him know by this weekend and will try to talk him down.. Will be checking this one out today http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/cto/5824384953.html.. ill let you guys know, and yes I'm taking my time looking as there's no snow coming for a bit
