U bought a new water pump, t-stat and radiator......the last major component of the cooling system is the fan clutch.......might as well replace it and the other items while the old rad is out.

I use whatever "compatible with all systems" coolant is on sale.
If you do buy a hose to flush I guess you could leave out the thermostat and run water to the radiator with your hose. Of course you need to block the lower radiator inlet. That way the clean water will circulate through the engine but the water will leave the lower rad hose faster than the water hose can replace it, so either restrict the exit flow or only run the engine for a short time.

Auto part stores sell "back flush kits" for a few bucks, they come with instructions. Might be a good way for your needs. You will need a garden hose to use them.

I thought we bought a new radiator, water pump and t-stat? Why flush anything thru a new rad? With the t-stat housing off and the old water pump off, just stick the hose in the opening for the t-stat and flush both the cyl. head and block out the hole for the water pump. Then stick the hose in one heater hose, or the other, and flush the heater core.

Yes all three are new but wp and tstat are back on. Is there w way to drain the block. I am getting confused sry. I am jst worried to screw something up.

edit: Nevermind i just reread your post about putting hose in. So just to make sure i am understanding this right. I stick the hose in the tstat hole and it will flush the stop out of the wp hole?????? Will the water left in there hurt anything? Alsi just stick the hose in the heater core house and it will flush the heater core? Sorry not trying to irriatat anyone.

correct, this would be a good way to do it, and flush the heater core hoses in both directions. and any water left will not hurt anything, you might be alittle light on coolant but some full strength coolant can be added if needed.

Hot water won't hurt and might help the cleaning, that's what my Momma always said.

Exactly, and don't flush anything thru the new rad. When the water is running PERFECTLY CLEAR from the water pump and heater core, let it drain a bit and make all the hose connections, etc. Add 1 gal. straight coolant to the rad, then start adding 50/50 coolant 'til the rad is full. Leave the new rad cap off, start the motor, let idle and keep the rad full while it idles/warms up. Install the rad cap when coolant burps out the top of rad.

My bet is, as nasty as that coolant was, it'll start turning rusty brown again fairly quick. On a regular basis, ENGINE COLD, pop the rad cap and check coolant level/color. When that bright green color starts to change, flush it again. The brown coolant you discovered earlier was from pure and simple previous owner neglect......coolant doesn't turn that color overnight. Sounds like your new-2-you XJ needs some bumper-2-bumper TLC.

Then she turns and gave me that look I know i will probably never get rid of her (jeep) There is no body rust or damage besides a few dents.

LOL @ jealous gf.

When you fill the coolant and start to run the jeep and the coolant begins to circulate you should squeeze the hoses to burp out any air pockets.
