now that this has happened everytime i drive the jeep it is making a grinding type noise
is that what the problem would be? or could it be something else?

its possible that the front drive shaft is at to much of an angle and catching it when you bounce around. but idk. and yeah check all your ujoints and what not cause i know thats where most of my grinding noises are comming from.

I think your front driveshaft has a CV joint at the transfercase instead of the double cardan joint that the newer ones have. The grinding noise is probably the cv joint because when the boot tears, debris can get in the joint. As to why the boot tore so quickly, it could be that the angle on the joint is too much with the transfercase drop in there which tilts the back down creating a steeper angle on the front.
