Default hello fellow jeep lovers, this is my first time here need some help.

first off, hello everyone, good to be here. my question is this. i have a 1998 jeep cherokee sporT 4.0 (XJ). Every so often i get a check engine light pop up. when i do a diagnostics it is always the same code P1899, now i know this is transmission related, although i do not have any problems with the tranny. i believe it is a sensor that recognizes either neutral or reverse. it seems to hapen after a few rainy days, so that tells me something is getting wet and causing the problem. how do i find out exactly what sensor it is, and how do i change it? thank you to anyone who can help me out.

First, Welcome to CF from NJ, now here is what I found in my FSM "P1899 Park/Neutral Position Switch Stuck In Park or In Gear" you can also check it with the jeep CEL and go to http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoECUcodes.htm to find out more info...Tj

Welcome from PA now down to business sounds like your neutral saftey switch you can pull it off and clean it you can change it if wanted but they are expensive it is on the passenger side of the truck if you search around for posts there are writeups on how to pull it off and clean it good luck

Does sound like the NSS. Just replaced mine. The new one was 130 bucks at Napa and has a better design than the old switch. I would try to rebuild first. I broke my threads taking it off. One advantage of a new switch....the wires entering are molded in. It will never get dirty and it will never happen again.

Welcome from NJ. Open the switch, sand down and clean the contacts. Seal it up and see if it works. I had the same issue on my 96.
