Bought cherokee 2 year ago. I ran but I had to put a a new engine in. Just finished hooking everything up but when I turn the key there is a buzzing coming from the back of the truck, I think the fuel pump. And there is no action from the starter even though it is a good starter. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP I NEED IT RUNNING BEFORE WEEK END!!!! any help is greatly appreciated

Take a piece of wire an hook it to the small threaded stud on the starter solenoid. Not the big one that has the large gauge battery cable on it, but the small one. Use and alligator clamp or something, but make sure you've got a good clean connection.

Make sure it's in park and that the emergency brake is on, and touch the other end of the wire you hooked up to the positive post on the battery for just a second. If it cranks, you have an issues somewhere in the ignition circuit. Could be the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, or a broken/disconnected wire on one of those two items, or the simplest cause, fuses or the starter relay. If it doesn't crank, you've got a starter problem or a ground problem where the engine isn't grounded so there's no + and - for the starter. If it doesn't crank, try tapping (not banging) on the starter housing with a hammer. Starters, especially if they sit unused for awhile, can have the brushes get stuck and not make good contact with the contacts inside. Tapping will usually loosen them enough to make contact. If tapping on it works, you may look at getting yourself a new starter if you have to use the tap trick repeatedly.

Ok I did that and the starter spun, what if I rigged that up to be permanent say like a push button start. Are there any forseeable problems.

Well, my inclination would be to find the source of the issue and have everything working as intended. That being said, I don't know that you would necessarily have any problems, per se, but if you've got a short in one wire due to rubbing, it could work it's way through to other wires. Or, if your ignition switch is failing on one contact point, others may not be far behind. If you wanted to rig up your wire to a momentary contact push button switch until you can find the real source of the issue and correct it, I don't see any problem with it being a temporary work-around. Just don't put the push button anywhere it is likely to get pushed or hit by something with the engine running. Lastly, I don't know if this would pose a problem for getting your annual safety inspection in whatever state you live in, or be a problem with your insurance company if your rig is stolen.
