Check for vac leaks. When you have a vac leak it outomaticly defaults it to defrost. Also check to see if your cruise works. If it dont then when you fix the vac leak that will fix both problems. They are both tied together.

x2 on the vac leaks. The system will default to defrost when vacuum is lost. Safety issue.

i had the same problem, but there was no leak there is a vac hose that goes from the intake manifold to the passenger side then tees off to the firewall and a canister, i took off the hose and cleaned it out with sea-foam ( there were like little filters in the hose that were clogged) put it all back together and it worked first try.

One of the pieces on the vacuum line is a one way check valve. If there is not a vacuum leak anywhere then the check valve could be bad. Take it off and see if you can blow through it in only one direction. If its bad all the stored vacuum in the tank will leak back to the intake when you are on the gas. Autozone sells universal replacements for a few dollars.
