Default Clutch issues

Well, I just got my first Jeep(s). Got a 91 Cherokee Sport that I'll be driving, and an 89 Cherokee that I'll be using for parts (the entire passenger side is rusted beyond repair). Anyway, when I got them, I knew that there was an issue with the clutch. I was told that it's the slave cylinder. Now, from my experience, when a slave cylinder goes, you usually lose fluid, however in the Jeep I got a good 50-60 clutch presses out of it before the gears started getting harder to engage yet the fluid is staying at the same level.

My question is this: Could this be a problem with something else, or is it for sure the slave? I'd like to see if anyone else has had this problem before I drop the transmission. Thanks!

Bumping this again. Was moving the Jeep the other day, expecting to have to start it in gear to try and get it going. Clutch was working fine again and then doing the same thing. Fluid level doesn't look like it's dropped at all over the 3 weeks that it's sat for. Any help on this would definitely be appreciated.

there should be a little tube running to the transmission and a rubber boot. check that out to see if its falling off. this happened to my friends yj except he lost all pressure in the clutch. to fix it we just put a hose clamp around the rubber and it stayed just fine. other than that, my 5 speed is a hard shift in the mornings due to the cold. also, the stock tranny fluid is known to eat away the synchros..coming up soon, im going to be replacing mine with some gm synchromesh..good luck!!

Might want to try bleeding the clutch, and check the trans fluid.

Hope that helps,
Billy

I think mine might be the clutch master or slave cyl. I might just change both of them any way . Where is a good place to buy them on line ?

If you have an older rig that you haven't changed the fluid in the master cylinder in you may want to do a fluid change. Over time the heat and cooling cycles will add moisture to the fluid and it will not work correctly. ( more so when it is cold, had an 88 GMC that the fluid was so bad that I ended up doing the start in gear )

I had similar problems with shifting into first gear , it was the master loosing pressure (not leaking) one way you can tell if the master n slave is working right is to start it up in neutral and press in the clutch and try to put it in reverse, if it grinds the clutch is not releasing (bad master/slave)

if i goes in fine you have other issues to look for .synchros, correct oil ext..

Thanks! I have owned my 97 for almost 3 years now and it always grinds when I put it in reverse. I have never replace a slave cylinder before. Do you think it would be best to have someone else replace it?

MARK, I get BIG time grinding like U said. I am going to replace both parts. My RIG has 311K on it, but has a rebuilt motor. So Iam sure the M/S cyl need replacing.

but be for you do replace the m/s make sure that you have the correct weight oil, thicker oil will make the trans hard to shift in "all" gears and too thin of oil will shift great but when shifting into revers it takes longer (afew sec) to spin down and stop making you have to wait to get it in revers.
royal purple mtf and quart of heaver weight will do the trick.

If anyone is going to change the tranny fluid I would check your owner's manual. My 97 takes 75W + 90 gear oil
