I used 77 for my ‘96. Perhaps I didn’t use enough, though I did cover both surfaces. It started seperating a few weeks later when the weather got hotter.
I used Dap Weldwood contact cement, rated to 180*, similar to 3m high temp spray. I did not use foam backed material though, used a cotton fabric. 4 years ago and still holding.

I believe the high heat one is 3m 90, 250* rated and hard to find locally. Very expensive around here too, which is why I experimented with Dap weldwood.
3m 90 is what I've used in the past and haven't had any issues. 3m's application guide shows #76 and #90 as the only high-temperature fabric bonding solutions. 76 appears to be more expensive than 90. 90 is $13 a can on Amazon.
Loctite adhesive 2 spray cans at home depot 11$ a can used very generously and 1 more can for just the visors and speaker bar., you need 2 cans for just the headliner only is my experience
the way i did it was headilner up side down on table spread the material over and then rolled it back up loosly to one end and sprayed the headliner bits at the time starting from the back towards the front where the visors sit.. about 1 foot of a strip then rolled the material over and had no wrinkles and kept going till it was all on there, spraying the complete headliner all at once didnt seem like a good idea to me.

I am getting ready to do my headliner and I am not finding anything that points to the best long term results with different adhesives. There seem to be 3 that come out as best candidates:
That site shows the 3M 08090 going to 200 degrees.
I ended up getting my headliner fabric from headlinermagic. I was going to use stockinteriors (since they had sent some samples I requested). the price was great until I saw the shipping (38.80 for 3 yards of headliner).
The right glue for the job is Weldwood Contact Adhesive (Landau Top & Trim). Buy a cheap $20 Low pressure, low volume spray gun from Harbor Freight with a 1.8 tip.
You will need a compressor, but that glue is what auto upholsters use. It is about $40. for a one gallon can.
OH!
And spray it outside if you use it, as it is highly flammable.
I was looking at that option too. I'm doing the headliner on my 98 and then will do the same on my wife's 99 so a gallon of this makes sense. How much would you expect to use for an XJ headliner? I would have to image a quart would be enough. I have a harbor freight purple gun that I use for some painting so I'll use that and then toss it.

YES! What he said.
I picked up an extra head liner from a junk yard so I could do the fabric then swap them out when I had time. So I took the time and tried to do it right but a day later after sitting in a hot garage it was already coming loose with Super 77. So I thought maybe I stretched it too tight and pulled the head liner from my Cherokee and took another day and redid that one. Same thing, it is coming apart in a couple of spots but no too notice-able. I took my visors and center roof console to a local car upholstery shop. When I went to pick them up the guy told me the only one he uses and has not had an issue with is the Weldwood Contact Adhesive (Landau Top & Trim), right here. https://www.ebay.com/i/281094382720?chn=ps
It is up to you to decide if you want to pay the extra for the spray gun or take a chance with the S77?
I didn't list the 3M 77 since it always comes up with the same outcome that it doesn't hold up. I already ordered the Weldwood from Amazon this morning. Should be delivered Thursday, Amazon Prime FTW. Unfortunately, headlinermagic only sells the med. grey through Amazon. I needed the medium opal so had to order it through them directly. Still waiting to ship from TX to VA. I hope it gets here so I can do the whole thing this weekend.
Finally got the headliner done today. Wasn't too bad at all. Have a few little indentations in the middle, but overall very happy with it. Only scare was after I got it all back together. the dome lights didn't work, visor lights didn't work, none of the gauges working. Checked all the inside fuses and all were good. Checked the ones under the hood and found #17, Ignition off draw was blown. Must have touched something somewhere to blow it. Replaced it and all was good.
the DAP Weldwood Landau contact cement was very easy to use. I got a spray gun from harbor freight and it went on well. Only ended up using 1.5 quarts if that. Pain to clean up afterwards. I was going to just trash the spray gun, but decided to give it a clean. Only pain was the reservoir.
I noticed the dome light was not on straight. It is now. Fits much more snug than it used to. I was shocked at the condition of the rear speakers. Looked brand new.
