I have a 87 4.0l 5 speed truck, it has this odd quirk. If I have the headlights on, I can not turn them off if the truck is off, I have to roll the key to the on position then back off again for them to turn off. the dash shuts off but the headlights stay on..... Anyone heard of this? maybe is it supposed to be that way, my other truck is a 89 4.0l auto and it doesn't do this.

DON'T LEAVE THE LIGHTS ON! Mine does this all the time. Just kill the lights before shutting the engine off. If you forget, which I'll admit I do quite often, just switch the ignition to "on" and back to "off" and the headlights should go out. It takes less than a second. Make sure all switches are off before shutting the engine off, simple as that. I left mine on one day, in 10 minutes the battery went dead. We don't have a fancy timer to kill the lights on our old ones.

Even if the switch is hit when the engine is off, the lights will stay on. At that point you do the ignition thing. Better than leaving them on and learning the hard way IMO.

its a safety feature... its suppose to light your way in the dark if you can't see they should turn off in about 2-3 mins... its a head light delay..

Sentinel headlights operate this way.
Key on, turn headlights off, they go off.
Key off, turn headlights off, they stay on for about 2 minutes.

I honestly don't think mine has the delay thingy. Unless it just broke a long time ago and my dad never got to fixing it. For as long as I've had it I don't think mine shut off, haha. I don't wanna test it and find out the hard way either. I just make sure I turn them off before I shut the ignition off

Had the same problem with my-90 XJ. First few years the delay relay worked but then I got the same problem. Drained the battey. Solution was to remove the delay box and carry a flashlight in XJ for use when needed.
