i got no power to headlights. i have checked all fuses and bulbs everything is good. thought it was the switch but have power to the headlights but no power at the headlights. any ideas?

you have power on the red wire at the switch?

 

yes. all the lights work except low and high beams. do you think this could have something to do with my ignition switch not working. I had another thread about that and to fix it I justed hooked a the starter relay to a switch to start.

 

I'm not sure about that, but I do know that power to the headlights routes through the the high beam select switch with a tan wire.....after that depending on switch position you would direct through lt green wire for low beam and white for high beam. There are also fuseable links that power the ignition and headlight switch on the starter positive power post.

They look like wire........which is what they are . They are about two to three inches long and always a diameter smaller than the wire they are attached to. They are normally made with alluminum wire and feel rubbery when handled. You need to use a multi-meter to test them. I think the headlight fuse link is green in color and the ignition link is red.

 

These both go to the posititv post on the starter?

 

yes, 85-1989 models. Battery cable to the starter, and then fusable links from the starter to headlights and ignition. They didn't use relays as much back then for high current draw circuits so they would share the primary starter post for them.

 

OKay I think I found them. They come off the starter relay post. I dont get how to test them the have the rubbery wire then a rubber boot and then the normal wire how to I test for continuity and how doI know which one is for the headlights?

 

I believe green is headlights, but they both might be black or gray colored. Do you have a test light?. You could probe the solid wire after the link and if the light lites, then the link is good. I need to run out to the barn and check on the horses, i'll be back in about half hour to see if that worked out good for you

 

Okay tested 7 off them with a voltmeter (no test light). I got 12v from 6 out of the 7.

 

6 winners and 1 loser. You need to replace the one that didn't work
