Headlight Switch Problem
Greetings.
When I pull the switch my headlights don't turn on. The dashboard, left and right turn signal, and the high beam indicators all turn on though. This happened before but it went away after I unplugged my battery. Tried it this time around and it still doesn't work. Anyone else out there have had this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Also, when I turned on the hazard lights it buzzed everytime the lights blinked. Each buzz got shorter and shorter and shorter until in stopped buzzing all together...

Sounds like you have a bad ground somewhere. Most likely from your head light switch. I would inspect the wiring that runs to your switch and make sure they have not melted as this is a common occurance. Replace the switch and make sure all of your fuses are good and see what happens! Good Luck!!

My steering wheel is very loose so I'm guessing it chomped up some wiring.

mine is too I thought the same thing but I completly disassembled the entire column and pulled the wiring and none of it was messed up so I ran all the wiring from the switch... Nothing, my buddy says there's a main headlight ground somewhere in the engine compartment and that's what was causin his xj to do it too

Try replacing the headlight switch itself. Here is a great how to link:

I had the opposite problem where my pull **** would not go in so I couldn't turn my lights off.
I replaced the switch and spliced in a new harness pig tail. My switch and connector were melted and crumbled when I separated the two pieces.
I got a new harness from an Auto Electric Specialist shop. The Dodge/Jeep dealer was clueless in helping me get a new harness or pig tail.

I can't get the switch out. The bolt that keeps it locked in (the one that requires a wide flathead screwdriver) is stripped.

I figured out my issue you might wanna try it to seein as how we have the same issue, the wiring harness going between the headlights themselves had a broken wire from a rock hitting it, they work perfect now

Specific fix to this problem post
Hi All. A couple of years after this thread was started, and I had the exact same problem. when I tried to turn on my headlights, turn signal and high beam indicator lights light up, but no headlights.
I checked everything I could find, cleaned and reconnected all of the grounds I could find, bought a new switch, but just before taking out the switch, decided the follow a tip on another thread, and ran a temp ground wire from the negative battery terminal, directly to the negative feed on the passenger headlamp plug. Lights came on immediately, but went right back off when I remove the wire. Now the stupid part. In a stroke of brain dead/ genius thinking, I decided to touch the temp ground wire to the upper of the three connectors in the headlamp plug, forgetting that it was the high beam feed. When I touch the wire to the lead, it sparked, and when I jerked the wire back, my entire problem was fixed!!! The lights stayed on, and everything worked perfectly.
After talking to a friend, we surmise that there was/is another ground that I could not find, which was not making a good connection, and I basically burnt through the problem.
To be sure it did not come back, I spliced a new ground wire into the negative lead for the headlight plug, and bolted it to the frame.
Lights seem brighter than they have been for years! Hope this helps.
