Default headlight problems

Well, I recently purchased a 1988 Cherokee. I've read that a lot of xj's have a dim headlight problem. My problem arises when I dim the gauge cluster it also dims the headlights. Could that be a Faulty light switch? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

2 things.

Since you own an 88, click on the link in my signature and do posts 1 through 5 just because.

Secondly, the headlight switch may be toast. There's a supplemental harness you can add that almost eliminates all the load from the switch and your headlamps will be 35% brighter. The connector pictured in Post 3 can also be a big contributor. Check it out.

Thanks cruiser 54 For the advice! I'll have to try that this weekend, and where can I get that harness?

See xjsnake's post above. The best link on headlight upgrades ever.

OK, so I've done steps 1-5 on cruisers list, and cleaned everything up (which was really dirty!) and I think I've narrowed it down to 2 things. 1. The headlight switch is toast. When I was messing with it I could hear a loud buzzing. 2. When I turn the blower motor on high it works for about 5 seconds and then the blower turns off along with the radio. Does that sound like a bad relay? Any thoughts?

No relay, but a circuit breaker.

Replace the headlight switch an inspect your ignition switch.
