Default Head light wiring harness fried

2000, 4.0 Cherokee, my Head lights would go on and off and I would not know it. I pulled the switch out and the wiring harness is pretty melted. The dealer had two options, a complete new $1,200 wiring harness or wire each light connection directly to the blades on the headlight switch.

What was the cause of the problem, harness, switch, fuses, short, any or all of the above?
Thanks

Hi. This seems to be a common problem with Cherokees and its caused by bad grounds, loose connections or too much draw on the lights. I would hit a Junk Yard and replace the wiring all the way back as far as you can...Tj

Dealer has those around 10 bucks

The plug melting like that is a result of a bad connection causing resistance on the contact points. Which would cause the push pull connectors to heat up and destroy the plug.

Mine was the same way the lights would flicker or not work at all. Than they would work again. Bought a new switch and realized this was the main problem. Nothin. @ my parts store dealer or junk yard. Anyone know where I can get s rebuild kit?

Default Head lights go off and on

I picked up a headlight switch at the junk yard and installed it....no luck.
I took it to 'Mr. Wires', and for $200 he fixed a short somewhere between the switch, the lights and the power source. He said he checked each wire until he found the problem and they work fine.
