I recently bought a 88 Cherokee Laredo a couple days ago. 4.0 4x4. I went out to the farm the next day to test it out on the mountain trails. While going up one of the trails is started to get hot, really hot. after a long day i finally got it home. When i got home the oil started getting milky. No smoke white smoke came out of the tail pipe though. I changed the coolant pressure reservoir and thermostat and then i bought blue devil and gave it a shot. After a long while the car started to sit around 180- 210. It worked! But im not sure for how long. Im leaving it parked until i change the oil. Should i do anything else? Im going to put another radiator and new hoses and a overflow tank and make it a open system. Now to the 4x4. before i went up the mountain i put it in 4hi and then 4lo because the trails are pretty steep. While going up the mtn it stopped pullin in the front, back tires started spinning an that arount the time the head blew. I took it back down and got out and my buddy drove it a couple feet so i could see if the front drive shaft was spinning and it spins. The part time light comes on. idk whats. Any help on either problem would be great! I'm new to Cherokees. Ive onwed a chevy 4x4, 4runner 4x4, and a firebird. My prior cars were manual, but the Cherokee is an automatic. I dont have much money im 17, but i turn 18 i n 3 days haha. Please give me some answer or opinions, options, ect. Thanks

 

yeah your head gasket is probably toast.hopefully your head isnt cracked . Might want to start saving up for a headgasket job, ive never known anyone to have good luck with headgasket in a bottle deals. As for the 4x4, sounds like your cad might be on the fritz. Probably a vacuum leak. Best thing to do is get a one piece long side axle and block off plate.

Thanks for the replies! Im not sure about the whole head gasket deal. I may end up replacing it anyways to be safe. For the 4x4 I'll look for the vacuum lines, because some are plugged up, so I'll chech those or either will make it a 91+ one axle design I guess. Thanks!
