How do I open my hatch if the outside lever doesn't work?

Climb inside and make your way into the rear cargo area. Pop the trim panel off at the center of the bottom of the rear window. There are a few clips that need to get popped out that might be tough if they've never been removed before. When you pop them out you'll be able to pull the trim piece away from the hatch enough to get your arm behind it. Reach down to find the latch mechanism on the bottom. Pull the vertical rod straight up to release the hatch. It helps if you have someone push on the hatch while you're pulling the rod to relieve the pressure against it.

Alternatively, you can remove the trim piece from the inside with the hatch shut. You'll have an easier time seeing the latch mechanism to know where to pull, but it is easy to do it without removing the trim piece.

 

If the lever is still hooked up, rods are still in place, sometimes pushing in on the hatch from the outside will let you open it.
