I have a 96 cherokee classic w/ a 4.0 liter engine. when I try to start it, it will sputter and run about 1000-1500 rpm. It finally dies after about 10-20 seconds. I've got about 45 psi of fuel rail pressure I can't tell if it holds it because my guage leaks down. I noticed fuel standing in the intake manifold after it died. Is it possibly an injector and how would you test them?

Well if you notice raw fuel in the intake manifold than you know it's getting fuel. I would look at spark. Last time you did a good tune up? Check for vacuum leaks. Any and all rubber hoses need to be checked throughly. If you wanna test the fuel injectors, get an automotive stethoscope or a long wooden dowel rod and hold it on each injector. You should hear them individually ticking as they spray the fuel. Also un-plug and re-plug them all back in. If still nothing, I would replace the TPS sensor and Idle Air Control Valve/ Sensor. Good Luck!!

I've just recently done a tune up, plugs cap and rotor, no change. I also have replaced the intake manifold gasket. Vacum hoses are good. Afew weeks ago it would start run rough for about 20-30 seconds then smooth out and run perfect. I just can't seem to get the rpm's up high enough to get all the cylinders to start hitting and smooth out. I'll try to get a stethescope, thanks.

I figured out why I had fuel standing in my intake. all my intake push rods were wadded up. If intake valves don't open no place for the fuel to go.

It ran rough, hard start. ran compression check had no compression on cyl. #1,2,5,6. pulled valve cover and found intake push rods looking like a snake. replaced all intake push rods. Started, ran better but still had miss. pulled v/c off again found #5 intake valve stuck down. and #6 bent. Intake valves sticking. for more info check Post -- Hard start 96' 4.0l xj
