I've been drilling these frickin things for the past 5 days and havent made a dent. I've bought every different type of drill bit I can find and nothing can make it through these things. Titanium, cobalt, heck I've even tried left hand drill bits to try and confuse it no luck! I even took it up to work and had them give a go at it with the drill press and all try said is they dont want to break a $100 drill bit on my crappy jeeps hinge. I wish they made the rest of the jeep out of the same metal as these stupid hinge pins, they would last through the apocalypse. Any ideas before I spend $60 on a new hinge?

 

Got a mill? That's weird. Sounds hardened. Sure you didn't glaze it tying to drill it?

 

I couldnt tell ya, I had the guys in the fab shop did it. It's incredibly frustrating. I'm almost tempted to cut it open, pull out the pin, and weld it back together. I'm not sure if I want to trust my doors to this tho.... Explosives might work tho...... if not it will at least make me feel better

 

Hahaha well if I get what you're trying to do you're trying to it is going to be very difficult. Is the pin spinning?

 

I don't know man your hinges are different from mine but I did drill out the pins on my 01. I drilled through the pressed lip on the top part of the pin then punched it out with a hammer and punch. It did take some time but it did go.

 

Nope the pin is definitely not spinning.

I got 3 of the 4 out no problem, just pounded them out into a socket placed under it. The last one was rusted pretty bad, and it broke off. I tried pounding it out for a few days and after ruining my garage floor I decided it's time to start drilling. I drilled and hammered it for a few more days and gave up on the hannering, it didnt seem to be doing anything. I didnt try a vice, I only had a C clamp that was a huge fail. I have it almost drilled through, but when I try to step it up to a larger drill bit, it doesnt seem to want to do anything. Maybe Ill try the hammer again, or use the vice at work. I broke two steel punches trying to get this darn thing out. Such a headache because I cant leave it outside overnight because I cant put the door back on. That and I'm rackin up the miles on my garage queen camaro.

 

Did you try heating it and using a punch?

 

Yes, I did on my '98, sort of.

The pin has a 'flange' on the top and you only need to grind the edges away and then just bang the pin downwards, with hammer and punch.

So on my Jeep, no need to drill out the whole pin! I used some very simple/cheap grinding bits from Harbour Freight. Put them in my electrical drill. Bit fiddley, but within 30 minutes I had grinded away sufficient material from the edge of the pin, so I could bang it out.

By the way, as an afterthought; not sure why you're taking the pins out. But if you think they're worn down and that's what causing the doors not to shut correctly, replacing the pin might not work at all.

In my case I thought the pin had worn down, but it was actually the hinge!! I've seen a few more messages on the forum where people start on the pins, but it's actually the hinge that is worn.

You can do it. Just gotta get the hinge red hot and start pounding.

Be careful. Things get real hot.

Yesssss! Heat did the trick. 5 minutes and it was out. I broke two punches trying to get it out at home without heating it up but I took it into work today and got it out with just a few hits of the hammer!

and a little sweet talk never hurt either slick hahaha I didnt get too far with the names I was calling it last week lol
