Default Hack N Tap

Im installing a IRO hack n tap kit, Ive all ready hacked the shaft, but my problem is I can not get the hole drilled for the tap. I have brand new colbalt bits but they wont make a scratch. The is already aboutan 1/8" hole started and I cannot get it any larger. The bits just spins and leave no marks on the 242 output shaft.

You might need carbide or diamond then. Or just more muscle.

When I did mine I just used a steel bit and had it in reverse while I was drilling the hole. Having it in drive kinda keeps the drill bit straight and in the center.

How much did you cut off the splined part?

Its a 242, may be different from a 231.

Vid from youtube:

And you don't have to have the truck running/spinning the shaft to drill.

He probably is.

And if you disconnect both the front and rear shaft its perfectly safe, and can actually be of great help. Its not mandatory tho.

The shaft is hardened at the end, you may not have cut enough off. You will not be able to drill the hardened end. Its still a bit of a job on the "soft" end too. I had mine running in reverse as well. On jack stands front and rear.
